This Sanctuary is located at 40 kms from Thodupuzha is one of the most nature rich areas of Kerala. It extends over the Thodupuzha and Udumpanchola taluks of Idukki district spreading over 77sq. kms, at 450 - 748m above sea level. A picturesque lake, a majestic arch dam across two hills and roaming herds of elephants and gaur are sights that lure you to this enchanting canopy of tropical semi-evergreen and deciduous forests.The fauna also includes Langur, Leopard and Wild Boar.

The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary

The huge mammal is found in pretty large number in Periyar Sanctuary - around 1000. Nagarahole is situated in the Deccan Plateau and forms an integral part of the Nilgiri biosphere. It is one of the finest remaining habitats of the Asiatic Elephant. Herds of elephants amble down to Nagarahole in the summer months, which is a good time to watch them in their element. Over 300 bird species have been reported in Nagarahole, including rarities like Blue Face Malkhoa, White-cheeked Barbet and Nilgiri Flycatcher. Some birds seen at Nagarahole are the Yellow Browed Bulbul, Pacific Swallow, Grasshopper Warbler, Orphean Warbler and the Yellow Billed Babbler. Besides, many species of owls - including the Short Eared and Oriental Scops Owl - come out at night.

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

Wildlife Sanctuary and was set up in the year 1973 is contiguous to the protected area network of Nagarhole and Bandipur of Karnataka on the northeast and Mudumalai of Tamil Nadu on the southeast. It is also known as the Muthanga. Wayand National Park of India is spread over an area of 344 sq km and forms a part of the Wayanad Plateau. It occupies area in two districts of Kerala. The northern part of the Wayand National Park falls under Cannanore district, while the southern area comes under Calicut district.
