Every sportsman understands that to be successful at a sport you need the proper equipment, and that equipment needs to be properly maintained. In fishing, that means cleaning and caring for fishing rods, reels, lures, and other gear. Reels should be dried after every use and stored in a bag or box to protect them.
Drying and protecting, though, isn't quite enough to keep your reels in tip-top condition. You also need to clean the reel once a year. Some anglers find cleaning their reel a little intimidating, but it doesn't have to be. Yes, it requires some effort, but the steps aren't difficult and the whole process only takes about an hour. Just follow the five simple steps below, and you should have no trouble keeping your reel in great condition.
Before You Begin
The first step to successfully cleaning your spinning reel is to gather supplies. You'll need:
Step One
Take the spinning reel off the rod, and then wipe off the reel with a couple of paper towels. The point in this first step is to get rid of the sand, dust or dirt that may be on the outside of the reel.
Step Two
You need to remove the handle. There are two ways to achieve this:
OR
Once you get the handle off, set it aside on the clean towel.
Step Three
Set the reel down so that the screws that hold it together are exposed. Take out the screws (usually 3 to 5) and place them on the clean towel next to the handle. On the reel, you should see a small place. Take off the plate and put it on the clean towel, too.
Step Four
With the plate removed, you'll be able to see the inside of the reel. Inspect the inside, and with a Q-tip clean off any debris you see there. After that, take your reel grease and place a couple of drops on each gear. If you aren't using reel grease, spray a little WD-40 on each gear. Once you've greased the gears, put a little grease or WD-40 on the handle, too.
Step Five
Reassemble the reel by following the disassembling process in reverse. First, replace the plate. Second, screw in the screws. Third, put on the handle. Fourth and last, either put the reel back onto the rod, or in its protective box or bag.
Now, take a step back and admire your handiwork. You've just cleaned your spinning reel. The process is pretty simple, isn't it? All you have to do is take a little bit of time once a year, follow these five steps and you'll enjoy your spinning reel for many years to come.
